# Asset Groups

Creating groups of assets in OCS allows you to manage multiple assets collectively, rather than individually. This simplifies actions like deploying packages and tracking their statuses.

At the time of writing, asset groups enable you to:

* **Deploy packages** on specific subsets of assets.
* **Track the deployment status** of these packages.

## Group types

Before creating a group, it’s essential to understand the difference between **static** and **dynamic** groups.

### **Static Groups**

A static group is created **once** from the results of a search query. The group is **not updated automatically**. To include new assets, you must manually **re-run the search** and add them.

### Dynamic Groups

A dynamic group is based on a **search query**. The query is **replayed regularly** to update the group with assets that match the search conditions at that moment.

## Group management

Group creation and update is available from the Multi-criteria Search page, using the **+ Group** button at the bottom of the results table. This button allows you to either create a new group or update an existing one.

**Navigate to the Multi-criteria search page**

Build a search for the example above. You should see a result like this :

Run the search once done.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Open the group form

Click the **+ Group** button at the bottom of the results.

A form will appear, allowing you to:

* Create a new group.
* Update an existing group.
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Create or update the group

Select the corresponding action from the **Action** drop-down.

Enter or modify the **Name** and **Description** for the group if needed.

Toggle the **Is Dynamic** switch to enable or disable dynamic update.

Set the **Visibility**:

* **Private**: Only you can see it.
* **Group**: Visible to your groups.
* **Public**: Visible to all users.

Click **Add** to save the group.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

## Group view

Once the group has been created, it will be visible in the interface under **Inventory → General → Asset groups**.

The group details page is divided into two main sections:

* **Information Section** (top of the page):
  * Displays general details about the group, such as its **name**, **description**, **visibility** and **type** (static or dynamic).
* **Tabs Section** (Below information):\
  The following tabs provide detailed insights and actions for the group:
  * **All assets (cached) tab** (Default tab):

    Displays the list of assets in the group.

    For **dynamic groups**, this list reflects the results of the last execution of the search query.
  * **Deployment tab**:

    Allows you to **view packages** assigned to the group.

    Track the **deployment status** and remove packages as needed.
  * **Related search tab**:

    Displays the **search query** used to create the group.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://documentation.ocsinventory-ng.org/user-docs/asset-management/asset-groups.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
