# Setup development environment

OCS Inventory 3.X is split across three separate repositories, each with its own codebase, language, and setup process. The guides below walk you through getting each one running locally for development.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If you're only looking to deploy OCS Inventory rather than contribute to it, these guides aren't for you - head to the [OCS Inventory Server Setup](/administrator-docs/server-setup.md) guide instead for a production installation.

{% hint style="info" %}
These three components work together: the **backend** exposes the REST API and stores the data, the **frontend** is the web console administrators use to view and manage it, and the **agent** runs on end-user machines to collect and send inventory data to the backend. For most development tasks you'll need at least the backend running, since both the frontend and the agent depend on it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://documentation.ocsinventory-ng.org/developer-docs/setup-development-environment.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
